ELLevation Introduction FlyerThis training from Language & Culture Services is where you can learn to use ELLevation as an efficient program for managing your ESL Program. All Schools will begin using ELLevation to monitor ELs/MLs. School staff will have easy access to data and strategies for ELs/MLs.

This training will provide efficient program management, high quality instruction, effective collaboration with colleagues and great student outcomes.

We hope you all had time to relax and recuperate during your winter break. Whether that means time with family, or time alone--all of us deserve the break. The December student sillies are over, and now we move into testing season. The WIDA Window is open--which means you will see your ML students being pulled out of class to participate in the yearly WIDA test. Encourage them to do their best, especially in secondary.

The full newsletter can be found at the link below. Stories include:

  • ELLevation Tips and Tricks - After pulling up an activity that you would like to try in your classroom, scroll down on the activity information page to find the "Student Support" section. This section will have a list of all your ML students and their levels. It will then show you what modifications or accommodations you should make for a student at this level and tell you which students need these modifications/accomodations.
  • Culture Corner - "Culturally responsive teaching (CRT) is an educator's ability to recognize students' cultural displays of learning and meaning-making and respond positively and constructively with teaching moves that use cultural knowledge as a scaffold to connect what the student knows to new concepts and content in order to promote effective information processing. All the while, the educator understands the importance of being in a relationship and having a social-emotional connection with the student in order to create a safe space for learning."
  • WIDA Window January 5 - March 3 - The WIDA Window is the time period in which schools administer the WIDA language test to all ML students who are a level 1-4.9. Your students will periodically be pulled from class to take this test, so be understanding if they miss some class time. The test can take a while and be tiring, so be positive and understanding if they are feeling a little burned out or tired. If they test a 5 or above they never have to take it again, which can be motivating to many students--so encourage them to do their best!
  • ELD Lead Celebration - Mountain Shadows Elementary ELD Lead, Susan Allen, has put together a "Dream Team" of students excelling at learning English. They help other students around the school. Every 15 days, their ML students are tested and placed in new Walk to Read groups. For the next cycle, they are having their ML's in a group that focuses on reading, writing, speaking, and listening and they will be speaking into a computer and doing the WIDA practice test.

For those who started LETRS training last year (cohort 1), the final full-day virtual sessions for Unit 5 will be ending at the end of February. If participants still need to do the full-day virtual training for Unit 5, please register on MIDAS as soon as possible. These are the final sessions and they will not be offered through USBE again. Full-day virtual sessions for units 6-8 are also currently available for registration on MIDAS.

  • From Lifespan to Healthspan - Our lifespan is defined as the number of years we’re alive. In the U.S., the average is about 77 years. But living for longer is not the only goal you should focus on. It’s also vital to think about your healthspan as the period of life spent in good health. That means we don’t just live long; we live well.
  • Food as Medicine - Nutrition is often promoted as a way to prevent or treat different chronic diseases, and you may have heard the expression “food as medicine.” In the right context, this term refers to prioritizing a balanced diet in an individual’s health plan, with the goal of preventing disease, reducing symptoms or treating certain conditions.
  • Beat the January Blahs - Feeling down at the start of your new year? As the days get shorter, many people find themselves feeling low and unmotivated, especially after holiday festivities and leftover credit card debt. For many of us, adapting to a new period can be rough on our mental health and lead to depression.
  • Morning Timesaving Hacks - You don’t have to feel rushed getting ready for work each day. The secret? Try incorporating some habits into your routine and you may even have time to spare before your workday starts.

As we begin to prepare for the 2023-24 school year, we would like to collect our mid-year 6th grade Acadience and Growth Measure data as soon as possible. This will allow us to provide the data to middle school principals and counselors as they begin their 7th grade registration process in January.

Please advise your 6th grade teams to administer their mid-year Acadience and Growth Measure in December, with the deadline being Friday Jan. 2, 2023. The mid-year testing window for Growth Measure opens Dec. 1, 2022.

The data we collect will inform the rubrics that we use as recommended guidelines for Reading placement. We appreciate your patience and collaboration in our efforts to use data to do what is best for students.

National Life Group LifeChanger of the YearSince 2011, LifeChanger of the Year has recognized almost 7,000 educators in all 50 states, and awarded more than $650,000 to school and school employees. Each nominee will automatically be eligible to win a cash prize up to $10,000, and all prizes are also split between the individual educator and their school.

Last year, LifeChanger recognized multiple educators from Utah, including Copper Hills High teacher Andrea Hinojosa. LifeChanger of the Year program is seeking nominations to help celebrate more of Utah’s educators.

For each LifeChanger nomination the organization:

  • Creates an individual profile on the LifeChanger website where community members can leave supportive comments.
  • Sends the nominee a congratulatory certificate.
  • Shares a press release about their nomination with local media.

Anyone can make a nomination (by name or anonymously) and it's completely free.  If you'd like to learn more about the program, go to www.lifechangeroftheyear.com or contact Christina Emmerthal with questions.

Dec. 2022 EMI Be Well NewsletterCheck out the Dec. 2022 Be Well newsletter from EMI. Stories include:

  • Looking Forward in 2023 & Beyond - Do you know why we ring in the New Year on January 1? It’s an old story. Most historians credit Julius Caesar with developing the Julian calendar more than 2,000 years ago, designating January 1 as the start of a new year. The Gregorian calendar, which many nations use today, started in 1582 when Pope Gregory XIII aligned the calendar with the earth’s rotation around the sun — marking 365 days.
  • Nutrition: Sleep on It - It’s well known that eating a balanced diet can help combat heart disease, type 2 diabetes and some typesof cancer. But did you know that the same nutritious diet can also help improve sleep? Studies show that a Mediterranean-style diet — one that’s filled with vegetables, fruit, beans, grains, fish and olive oil — can help improve sleep quality.
  • The Jolly (or Not) Holidays - Many folks find their mental health takes a nose dive during the wintry holidays. With extra demands on your time and energy, the added effort can bring on added fatigue — enough to deflate your spirits. Feeling down during the holidays is a common syndrome, and you’re likely to have plenty of company in this regard. The American Psychological Association recently reported that 38% of people said their stress increased during the holidays, and only 8% of people said they felt happier.
  • ’Tis the Season for Patience - The holiday season is a time for parties, gatherings — and frazzled nerves. Traffic, unexpected flight delays, misdirected packages and other holiday aggravations can be so stressful, you forget the holiday season is supposed to be joyful. But there’s a way to stay calm (or at least calmer) when faced with holiday stress: Cultivate patience.

PEHP Cost Tools InformationFind Quality Care & Best Value
Finding quality care at the right place is important. PEHP has several cost comparison tools that help you shop for the best providers and the best value. To get started, log in to your PEHP account and click “Find Providers & Costs” in
the top menu.

Find and Compare Providers
Under the “Find a Provider” tab, you can search for doctors and other healthcare providers in your network, see and compare
cost information, and read reviews from other PEHP members. Plus, you can see how often a doctor refers lab work to a costly hospital or lower-cost independent lab.

Find and Compare Healthcare Facilities
Under the “Find a Facility” tab, you can search for healthcare facilities (e.g. hospitals, clinics, surgical centers) in your network, and see and compare cost information.

These cost comparison tools are just one way PEHP strives to make healthcare costs transparent, so you decide where to go for the best care and value.

Compare Medical Costs & Find Cash Back Opportunities
Under the “Compare Medical Costs” tab, you can search by medical services. You’ll see cost information for services based on past claims PEHP processed. Your search results will display common services based on the treatment you entered to give you a better idea of total costs at different locations where the service has been performed. For each location, you’ll see a list of providers who have performed your desired treatment. Compare providers and costs to seek quality care and great value.

Look for cash back opportunities offered by PEHP for certain medical services performed by lower-cost providers. The amount of cash back can range from $50 to $2,000. You’ll see a cash back indicator next to the location categories and provider names. To qualify for cash back, you must contact PEHP at 801-366-7555 or via the secure Message Center before receiving services. To learn more, visit www.pehp.org/save.

Dec. 2022 Incidental Learning NewsletterThe JSD Teachers for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing Team has created a monthly newsletter.  The full newsletter for December can be found at the link below. Stories include:

  • Ambient Noise
You just heard the classroom door close. As a hearing person, you glean information from this. You learn that someone just entered or exited the room. Maybe this means it’s okay to use the restroom… or someone is going home sick… or a service provider has taken a student out of class… What information would you be missing if you never heard this noise?
You hear students whispering in the corner of the room. Perhaps they are telling a joke… maybe sharing answers on the quiz… maybe they are poking fun at someone… What information is being missed if you don’t have access to this conversation?
  • Incidental learning
Incidental learning happens any time a student gleans information beyond the learning outcome. Because DHH students don’t overhear conversations, they miss out on a lot of incidental learning. Thus, it is vital that no question be considered inappropriate. You may be the only exposure the student has had to this information.
  • Closed Captioning
Just a friendly reminder to make sure all videos are accessible by turning on closed captioning or subtitles.

Dec. 2022 ML Monthly MemoThe holiday season is here! We are all excited to celebrate and relax with our families and friends over our long winter break. This is a great time to talk to students about traditions they do celebrate with their families--whether they fall in this month or not. Enjoy the season!

The full newsletter can be found at the link below. Stories include:

  • Teaching Strategies - A successful classroom is one in which students feel known, appreciated, and comfortable taking emotional and intellectual risks. That requires intentional planning and consistent messaging by the teacher.
  • Culture Corner - What are some fun holiday traditions (or just fun traditions) that your students practice in their home, or back in their home country? Engage your students in conversation about the traditions they practice, whether it is for a 5 minute chat at the beginning or end of class or through an activity that they get to share with their classmates. This allows you to strengthen the relationship and create a space where all students feel welcome and appreciated as they are.
  • ELLevation Tips & Tricks - Choose the "Strategies" tab from the upper right top dropdown list, and click "Activities." You will see a wide range of activities & strategies that you can use with all your students (English and Spanish graphic organizers included!).
  • Reflective Questions - How is my student feeling in my classroom? Do they look scared, comfortable, or disengaged? Are they sitting next to a buddy they can ask a question in their home language? Do they feel comfortable tapping me on the shoulder if they have to go to the bathroom? Do they know how to ask to use the bathroom?
  • ELD Lead Celebration - This month we are highlighting Alisha Wheeler at Copper Mountain Middle School. If you ask anyone at the middle school, or anyone at all who has worked with her, they will all say the same thing: She is amazing, brilliant, and a wonderful advocate for her ML students. As an instructional coach and ELD Lead, she works tirelessly to support her teachers in supporting their ML students and she has a wealth of information that even the most veteran teachers learn from. She is a safe space for both staff and students as they work to learn from each other. THANK YOU, ALISHA!
