Our Legacy PosterBlack History Month is a time of reflection, recognition, and rejoicing on the achievements that African Americans have made in history. Rejoicing and celebrating in the hope for a better tomorrow for all generations and recognizing the life lessons and legacy of our ancestors and be thankful for their sacrifice.

The Black Student Union and Multicultural Clubs of Jordan District invite you to a fun celebration to kick off Black History Month on Friday, Jan. 27 from 6 - 8 p.m. at Elk Ridge Middle. Dr. Tamara Stevenson, President of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & C.D.O. at Westminster College is the Keynote speaker.

Healthy Utah PosterStart 2023 by learning how healthy you are! Participate in a Healthy Utah testing session. All employees and spouses covered on the Jordan School District PEHP medical plan are eligible to participate in the health incentive program. Healthy Utah offers a free appointment with a professional staff member.

  1. Get Started - Go to pehp.org and log in to your member account. If you haven’t created an account previously, you will need your PEHP identification number to create your username and password.
    Once you are logged in click on the Wellness drop down tab. Select “Register for Testing Sessions”. There you are able to schedule a testing session. You can also call Healthy Utah at 801-366-7300 to schedule an appointment.
  2. Get Checked - All employees and spouses covered on the Jordan School District PEHP medical plan are eligible to participate in the health incentive program. Healthy Utah offers a free 30 minute appointment with a professional staff member, which includes these assessments:
    • Cholesterol
    • Diabetes risk
    • Blood pressure
    • Body Composition

    After you receive your biometrics / lab results from Healthy Utah, and take the Health Assessment, you can earn $50 for the “First Steps” annually. You can also see if you’re eligible to receive the $50 “Good for You” rebate.

  3. Get Involved - Participate in a health rebates & the educational opportunities. Step 4 - Stay Fit Participate in a health challenge or other Healthy Utah activity or service.

Jan. 2023 Literacy Matters NewsletterThe Literacy Matters Newsletter has the latest literary updates. Be sure to read this edition to stay connected with literacy. This newsletter includes:

  • Walk to Read Extension Group Support - Our wonderful Gifted and Talented department has created a folder of tips and supports for the resources that were given to schools, such as Jacob's Ladder, Vocabulary Ladders, Byrdseed TV, etc. We encourage coaches and teachers to take a look! If you would like more support, please reach out to Taryn Cox for more training. GT-Walk to Read- Extension Resources.
  • 95 Percent Group - Great news! The Phonics Lesson Library decodable passages are now available to download and print! Coaches can find them by logging in to 95percentgroup.com and clicking on the related PLL. We have also downloaded them into a shared folder for easy access: Decodable Passages. These can be used to supplement the phonics chip kit lessons in Walk to Read or to provide extra practice in classrooms or other WTR groups.
  • Zoom Q&A Meetings for Coaches - The district literacy team will be hosting optional monthly Zoom meetings for coaches who have questions relating to literacy instruction and assessment. Our next meeting will be Monday, January 23rd at 2:00. Coaches can submit questions beforehand via this survey.
  • 6th Grade Acadience & Growth Measure - To facilitate 7th grade reading class placement, middle schools have asked that 6th graders complete MOY Acadience and Growth Measure assessment by Jan. 6.

Instructional coaches can request to be an observer of the course instead of registering on JPLS.

Topics include: Antecedents, behavior basics, class-wide and individual interventions, increasing academic effectiveness, data-based decision making, students with unique needs, and personal wellness.

Format: This 7-week course will be offered online in an asynchronous format. Learners will engage with content and activities via Canvas. Participants must complete the first module within the first week, or their spot in the class will be given to someone on the waitlist.

1 USBE credit is available at no cost for those who complete the course.

YuJaJordan School District is excited to share our new partnership with YuJa, a video and screen recording software. The YuJa Enterprise Video Platform is an all-in-one video experience to securely create, manage, discover, collaborate, and live stream video content across any device.

Educators and students can create videos with unlimited storage and share their projects across a variety of district tools including Google and Canvas.  You'll find YuJa in your Google Waffle, where you can access your account and begin making videos today!

ELLevation Introduction FlyerThis training from Language & Culture Services is where you can learn to use ELLevation as an efficient program for managing your ESL Program. All Schools will begin using ELLevation to monitor ELs/MLs. School staff will have easy access to data and strategies for ELs/MLs.

This training will provide efficient program management, high quality instruction, effective collaboration with colleagues and great student outcomes.

We hope you all had time to relax and recuperate during your winter break. Whether that means time with family, or time alone--all of us deserve the break. The December student sillies are over, and now we move into testing season. The WIDA Window is open--which means you will see your ML students being pulled out of class to participate in the yearly WIDA test. Encourage them to do their best, especially in secondary.

  • ELLevation Tips and Tricks - After pulling up an activity that you would like to try in your classroom, scroll down on the activity information page to find the "Student Support" section. This section will have a list of all your ML students and their levels. It will then show you what modifications or accommodations you should make for a student at this level and tell you which students need these modifications/accomodations.
  • Culture Corner - "Culturally responsive teaching (CRT) is an educator's ability to recognize students' cultural displays of learning and meaning-making and respond positively and constructively with teaching moves that use cultural knowledge as a scaffold to connect what the student knows to new concepts and content in order to promote effective information processing. All the while, the educator understands the importance of being in a relationship and having a social-emotional connection with the student in order to create a safe space for learning."
  • WIDA Window January 5 - March 3 - The WIDA Window is the time period in which schools administer the WIDA language test to all ML students who are a level 1-4.9. Your students will periodically be pulled from class to take this test, so be understanding if they miss some class time. The test can take a while and be tiring, so be positive and understanding if they are feeling a little burned out or tired. If they test a 5 or above they never have to take it again, which can be motivating to many students--so encourage them to do their best!
  • ELD Lead Celebration - Mountain Shadows Elementary ELD Lead, Susan Allen, has put together a "Dream Team" of students excelling at learning English. They help other students around the school. Every 15 days, their ML students are tested and placed in new Walk to Read groups. For the next cycle, they are having their ML's in a group that focuses on reading, writing, speaking, and listening and they will be speaking into a computer and doing the WIDA practice test.

For those who started LETRS training last year (cohort 1), the final full-day virtual sessions for Unit 5 will be ending at the end of February. If participants still need to do the full-day virtual training for Unit 5, please register on MIDAS as soon as possible. These are the final sessions and they will not be offered through USBE again. Full-day virtual sessions for units 6-8 are also currently available for registration on MIDAS.

2023 Know More Conference FlyerYou all learned what students really wished we knew, now let’s continue to transform our learning environments for students to thrive. There will be amazing keynotes to challenge all Jordan District employees to lead and create positive relationships with our students.

Please attend JEAC, LCS, and EDIs 2nd annual conference on Jan. 17, 2023 from 9 a.m. to 12 pm. at West Jordan High. Attendees not on contract time will be paid their hourly rate. For those wishing to attend during contract time, please communicate with your supervisor regarding job coverage.

We also want parents to be apart of our team to KNOW More and be a part of listening to one of our powerful keynotes from our educator conference on Jan. 17, 2023 from 6 - 7:30 p.m. at West Jordan High. Spanish interpreters will be present. There is no need for parents to sign up, just show up.

Become a School CounselorUtah State University is holding an online open house on Feb. 1 for anyone interested in learning more about their web-based master's degree program in Professional School Counseling.

Please register in advance for this meeting. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

Utah State University faculty and staff are excited about the capacity this training program has to reach individuals across the State of Utah and surrounding areas who may be interested in pursuing a career in Professional School Counseling and receive a Master of Education in School Counseling in a setting close to their homes.

How to Request

During the window, the employee must send the request through email. Please include your name, school, position, and the date you are requesting the leave. Requests left on voicemail or over the phone will NOT be accepted.

The employee will receive an email confirmation within two working days after submitting the request. If the employee does not receive a confirmation email, then Human Resources has NOT received your request and your leave will not be approved.

Healthy Utah is coming to Jordan School District on January 20, 2023. During your appointment you will receive cholesterol and glucose testing, body composition analysis, blood pressure measurement, and a consultation with a health specialist, all free of charge for qualified employees and eligible spouses. Everyone who participates in the testing session will receive the “First Steps” $50 rebate!  After that, earn an additional $50 “Next Steps” rebate by completing your choice of 2 wellness activities from a variety of PEHP Wellness activities and programs (see “Next Steps” rebate form).  Other rebates are also available for those with diabetes ($100) tobacco cessation ($50), and Wee Care ($50).  Visit our website for more information at www.pehp.org
